I’m so happy I took the time to really plan our indoor/outdoor floor plan according to our lifestyle. “I can seat 20 comfortably without feeling crowded. “ When I have the doors open, it makes for quintessential California living,” says Lincoln. The designer’s Newport Beach home makes the most of its backyard space with a built-in fireplace and conversation area. Sliding doors that open to a a dreamy backyard, with an outdoor fireplace and a dining and entertaining area for a crowd, create the illusion of a much larger home. She added archways to the living room, a white-washed Saltillo tile floor, lots of custom storage, a built-in banquette and small bar in the dining room, and a Roman clay-clad hood over the range in the kitchen.

Undaunted, Lincoln was determined to up the charm factor, and pack all of her dream details into the floor plan. A framed vintage bathing suit and coast-themed photography, natural pillows, and a rustic wooden tray are part of the Pure Salt aesthetic. The con list was shorter, but contained two critical points: All of those features were crammed into a relatively small layout, and, more importantly, it was a somewhat generic new build. It had four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a yard for the kids to play in, and it was within walking distance of her siblings’ houses (Fun fact: Lincoln is a triplet.) Bistro chairs and a built-in banquette create a toy dining nook, suitable for family breakfast or dinner parties. In late 2019, after an extensive search, Lincoln and her husband found a house that ticked off just enough boxes on their long wishlist. “Clean, coastal, calm, and simple” is how Pure Salt designer and co-founder Leigh Lincoln describes the home she designed for her own family in Rancho Mission Viejo, California.
